The North-East Regional Health Authority is investigating claims that a man died at the St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital on Friday due to medical negligence.

The authority said the man, who was a diver, presented at the Accident and Emergency Department with signs and symptoms of decompression illness.

It said an initial management for his condition was started immediately and it was determined that he needed to be provided with hyperbaric oxygen which could only be done at the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory.

“Unfortunately the patient’s clinical symptoms deteriorated while preparations were ongoing for his transfer to the facility,” the regional authority said in a statement.

According to the authority, the hospital's senior management has had an initial meeting with the family members of the deceased in keeping with the Complaint Mechanism System.

“Notification has also been received from the Attorney representing the deceased’s family and investigations are ongoing surrounding the allegations made in relation to the clinical management of the patient.”

The North- East Regional Health Authority and the St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital expressed condolence to the bereaved family.
