Petrojam falls short on 90 octane gas supplies

Tanker drivers, some waiting from overnight, left the Petrojam refinery loading ramps in a huff at mid-afternoon, after refinery representatives advised they had no more 90 octane gas available. There was no shortage of 87 octane.

Representatives of two marketing companies confirmed the reports.

General Manager of Petrojam Winston Watson told the Financial Gleaner after an initial check that he was unaware of the shortage. However, later in the afternoon, Watson confirmed the reports but said 90 Octane would soon be made available to the trade and that Petrojam would be working into the night to regularise supplies.

“With today being a half-day we didn’t transfer enough product from the refinery to the loading ramps. The guys (Petrojam personnel) should have, but they didn’t,” Watson said.

He explained that the shortage was compounded by unusual demand from the petroleum marketing companies at the top of the week.

“It seems that because of the rains over the weekend, a lot of them did not stock up and so they came on Monday and Tuesday, depleting our stock," said the refinery head. "We could have been proactive and ask them to wait, because we knew we were running low," he added, regarding Wednesday's shortfall. "But we’ve called them back and we’ll work into the night to deal with it,” he said.
