JAMAICA’s martial artists’ return to world tournaments continues next week at the International Sports Kickboxing Association’s (ISKA) Amateur Members Association World Championships in Kemer, Turkey, set for the Daima Sports Complex, October 31 to November 6.

Jamaica has an outstanding record at the championships at which it last competed in 2019 at the Neptune Stadium in Cork City, Ireland, where Richard Stone completed a hat trick of double-gold performances.

A tatami and ring-fighting championship, Jamaica has twice hosted the tatami events at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, the last being 2018, topping honours in the continuous and point divisions, with 118 medals – 27 gold, 35 silver and 56 bronze – bettered only by England’s 126.

Jamaica return to the championships with a small team, pioneer and coach Jason McKay giving instructions to Jamaica 2018 double-gold winner Akino Lindsay, who also won gold in Portugal 2015 and Greece 2017, fighting at -86 and -90 kilos, respectively.

McKay, who won Jamaica’s first medal at the championships in 2012, winning a bronze to pave the way for the likes of Stone, Lindsay and female sensation Subrina Richards to record multiple gold medals, said he would be surprised if Lindsay doesn’t win gold in both points and continuous sparring.

“I would be extremely disappointed if he doesn’t win two gold medals. He is virtually unbeatable at ISKA tatami kick-boxing,” said McKay, who coached Nicholas Dusard to gold at July’s ISKA ESPN United States Open Night of Champions taekwondo feature match in July.

Lindsay, who also won four gold medals at the 2018 United States Open, is second to only Stone in number of gold medals won at ISKA Amateur Members Association World Championships.
