Girls bow into action at Penns today

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania:

The girls will bow into action at the 127th staging of the Penn Relays inside the Franklin Field Stadium today.

Edwin Allen High, Hydel High and Alphansus Davis High will be first on the track when they compete in heat two of the Championship of America 4x800 metres relay at 8:12 a.m. Holmwood Technical will compete in heat three at 8:23 a.m.

All eyes will be on Union Catholic out of New Jersey, who will take the track first in heat one at 8 a.m. They are the top seeds with eight minutes 48.68 seconds and, after finishing third last year, could go all the way this time around.

As many as 11 Jamaican teams, led by number one seed Hydel, will contest the preliminary round of the 4x100m, starting at 10:15 a.m. The other Jamaican teams in this event are defending champions Edwin Allen, Camperdown High, Holmwood, Holy Childhood High, Immaculate Conception High, Port Antonio High, St Jago High, St Mary High, Manchester High, St Andrew Technical and St Catherine High.

In field events, defending champion Cedricka Williams of Holmwood will be in action in the discus at 8 a.m. She will be joined by Shanara Richards of Clarendon College, Maha Henry of Immaculate, and St Jago’s Abigail Martin.

The in-form Britannia Johnson, who was a winner at the Carifta Games, will contest the shot put event at 9 a m. Rochelle Salmon of Edwin Allen and Juliet Smith of Immaculate will also compete here.

Mount Alvernia High’s Aaliyah Foster will compete in the long jump final at 8:30 a.m. Also down to compete in this event are Rohana Sudlow of St Catherine High and Rochelle Stanley of St Elizabeth Technical.

St Jago’s Jade Ann Dawkins is expected to continue her red-hot form in the triple jump at 9 a.m., where Celine Riddle of Holmwood and Jafe Ann Smith of Excelsior High will also be among the competitors.

Toriann Caven of Vere Technical will contest the high jump.
