Yoga – a blessing to the world
June 21 is commemorated as International Day of Yoga. More of us are becoming aware of the ancient art and science of bringing balance to life. We come together, greet each other, do some postures, breathing exercises, and meditate for some time. Yoga is much more profound and is beneficial for overall well-being.
The root meaning of yoga, which is derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj”, means “to yoke” or “to unify”. It is, in broader context, the integration of. Personality and is the method of achieving. Humans are a complex setup of body, mind, and soul, and in the today’s fast paced life, we get disconnected from them. Practising yoga creates the bridge between the physical and the non-physical. It brings harmony between body and mind, man and matter, the spirit and the divine. When the ‘being’ connects back with the self then the path to connect with the supreme power opens up.
There are four main ways to create equilibrium:
1) KARMA-YOGA: When the body is used to perform actions but the doer, the soul, is aware of the body and the act. This awareness improves the quality of actions, bringing selfless or desire-less service to others. You use daily activities to strengthen your connection with self and others.
2) BHAKTI-YOGA: When the mind generates feelings and emotions but the one who experiences is aware of the mind and the experience. This awareness creates a gap between the one who experiences and the experience, giving emotions a stable direction. It brings self-love, universal love, and love for god.
3) GYAN-YOGA: When the intellect is used to gain knowledge and wisdom but the ‘Being’ is aware of the intellect and the ego. You use the path of knowledge to build back the connection with the self and the Supreme. It brings oneness.
4) RAJA-YOGA: When the soul uses all the levels of living life but is always detached and aware of the self as a master of them. It brings a harmonious self-sovereignty.
Whether you use your actions or feelings or knowledge as the path, the ultimate goal is to reunite with the self and reconnect with the truth. Yoga is not just postures, rather it enfolds physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of life for a better living in harmony with everything inside and outside. It is important to understand the deeper meaning of yoga and reap holistic benefits.
