Students heading to university get financial boost
Three boys and two girls reaped success when they were awarded as a result of their performance in their Cambridge Higher School Certificate examinations. The recipients are headed to different universities locally and overseas.

Five awarded scholarships
Five former scholarship winners have been awarded the Jamaica Scholarships for boys and girls, the Jamaica Independence Scholarships, open and for girls, the Jamaica Centenary Scholarship for boys, based on the results of last December’s Cambridge Higher School Certificate examinations.
The awards are as follows: Jamaica Scholarship (Boys): Lipton George Wong Lyn; Jamaica Centenary Scholarship (Boys): Michael Arden Prescod; Jamaica Scholarship (Girls) Michele Sandra Barquie; Jamaica Independence Scholarship (Open) Gerald Alexander Groves; and Jamaica Independence Scholarship (Girls): Carol Antoinette Nevers.

Lyn, son of Mr and Mrs Daniel Wong Lyn of 19 Eastwood Park Road, Kingston 10, was born on October 19, 1945. He attended Alpha Primary School before going to St George’s College on a scholarship in 1956. He plans to study civil engineering at McGill University.
Prescod, son of Mr and Mrs L. A. Prescod of 27 Munroe Road, Kingston, was born on April 3, 1945. He attended the Savanna-la-Mar and Grange Hill primary schools, winning the Marcus Garvey Scholarship at the latter in 1955 to Jamaica College. He spent short periods at Kingston College and in England before going to Munro College. He plans to study either mathematics or engineering at a university in the U.K.
Michele Bacquie, born August 22, 1945, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs P. C. Bacquie of 12 Norbrook Drive, Kingston 8. She won a scholarship from The Surbiton Preparatory School in 1955 and has since been a pupil of Wolmer’s Girls' School. She plans to read modern languages at Cambridge and then take up a teaching career.
Going to U.W.I.
Groves, born February 1, 1944, is the son of Mr and Mrs Gerald Groves of 4 Cuopin Ave., Kingston 8. He attended the Suthermore Preparatory School, and in 1955, won a scholarship to Kingston College, where he was head boy last year. He plans to study medicine at the UWI.
Carol Antoinette Nevers of Mr and Mrs Stanford Nevers of 29 Butts Crescent Kingston 2. Born on August 24, 1944, she won a Code Scholarship from the Trench Town Primary School in 1955 and has since attended St Andrew High School. She plans to read arts at the UWI and to teach afterwards.
