Ottey wins 2nd  bronze of Olympics

Merlene Ottey-Page gained Jamaica’s second medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics when she placed third, in 22.09 seconds, to earn a bronze medal in the women’s 200 metres final last night.

It was also Ottey-Page’s second bronze medal of the meet.

She had earlier placed third in the 100 metres dash.

The race was won by 24 year-old American Valerie Briscoe-Hooks, who gained her second gold medal with a new Olympic record of 21.81 seconds. The previous record of 22.03 seconds was set by Barbell Wockel, of East Germany, in 1980.

Second in last night’s race was another American, the pre-race favourite Florence Griffith, who clocked 22.04 seconds.

Briscoe-Hooks, who won the 400 metres on Monday night, has a chance of a third gold medal when she competes on the United States 1,600 metres relay team.
