The Women Without Blemish Ministry of the Liberty for Living Ministries International presented the Victoria Jubilee Hospital (VJH) with a DC-30 ultrasound machine valued at US$18,000 at a handover ceremony on Friday.

The system is expected to generate high-definition images, scan and detect abnormalities and complications in the foetus, and perform other functions in a more efficient manner to ensure the safety of the mother and her unborn baby.

Prior to the donation, the hospital had two ultrasound machines. This newly donated machine will be housed in the triage area.

Pastor Marsha Wade, co-founder of the Liberty for Living Ministries International, along with her husband, Pastor Rowan Wade, presented the machine to the medical staff at the hospital.

She began her enthusiastic speech with Eric Donaldson’s classic, Land of My Birth, as the donation was made on the occasion of Jamaica Day.

“This is my Jamaica, what other place to serve first than my Jamaica? So it is with honour that I am standing in this position on this soil; a woman of this land...to serve my country in this way, a positive way,” she exclaimed.

Andrea Dawkins-Powell, deputy director of nursing services, welcomed the donation saying the Wades were like two God-sent angels, as she confessed that the hospital could not purchase a machine of this standard on its own.

“And so now that we have received this well-needed ultrasound, we must say with all things give thanks,” she added.

Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn, state minister in the Ministry of Health & Wellness, praised the couple’s efforts in making a second donation to the VJH.

In 2021, the couple gave two refrigerators, two microwaves, and two kettles to Ward 5, the early pregnancy ward, for patients and staff.

“You have to have the love for what it is that you are doing and this is really a special, special moment to see this beautiful piece of equipment that is so needed for so many women, our pregnant mothers to know what is happening internally with them and so we are very grateful,” she said.

Cuthbert-Flynn said the donation represented a significant step towards a wider progression in the area of maternal health, given that VJH is one of the largest maternal referral hospitals in the English-speaking Caribbean.
