Politicians high on the hog

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is ironic that a society that says it can only afford a national minimum wage of $7,000 facilitates ministers of government who rack up phone bills in excess of $8 million and communications consultants whose travel charges hover near $9 million at the expense of hapless taxpayers.

Something is drastically wrong with a society in which people living in penury are called upon to subsidise government ministers' wanton profligacy.

But, as long as there is no sanction for such misfeasance, and in instances where the comeuppance is resignation or an insincere apology, practices like these will be perennial.
