No blame or shame for Meadowbrook

Published:Tuesday | July 3, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

We are often too quick to react emotionally at times without taking a moment to understand the facts. One of your readers expressed public shame on Meadowbrook High for not being able to accept an incoming student with a disability.

Obviously, Meadowbrook High, like many schools in Jamaica, was not designed or built to accommodate persons with disabilities - a lack of foresight and understanding. Obviously, the principal was concerned about the student's safety and ease of mobility.

When there are stairs, multiple floors and buildings at facilities without proper wheelchair access, this makes it even more challenging.

We can't just say Meadowbrook High should be ashamed. Instead, these schools can try to learn from this and consult with the ministry to find ways to improve their facilities.

Kudos to Jamaica College, which was able to accept the student.
