A dose of 'good morning' cheers up the day
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I grew up in rural Jamaica - also referred to as 'in the country', which is oftentimes viewed as 'poorer' than living in the city.
Admittedly, city life typically offers experiences of greater development.
One of the beautiful experiences of growing up in the country, though, is the rich opportunity of greeting people as we go by. So in the morning, for example, we say, "Good morning." I was shocked when I moved to Kingston many years ago to attend Ardenne High School and experienced silence from some busy people who I greeted as we passed by. It still happens today.
Starting at home and as we go by, let us bring back "good morning" or such the like.
It is always so nice to make eye contact with others in traffic, too, and lip-read "good morning" or "hi", including from police personnel at intersections in this season of frenetic traffic management.
As a little comic relief, have you ever noticed that some rogue taxi drivers also greet you with a smile or even a grin when they want you to give them a 'bly' to cut across? Oftentimes, by the time you process it all, they take their 'bly' and are gone! LOL.
Good morning!
