May RIU rapist face justice
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Jamaicans felt a sense of shame as news spread that two tourists were raped at gunpoint in their hotel room at a RIU resort in MoBay, reportedly by a newly hired young trainee.
The news was like that horrific nightmare where you want to wake up quickly to find out it was just not real. There was a time when it was widely believed that all-inclusives were one of the safest places to be in Jamaica, behind the high walls, closed gates and tight security. Crime has infested every nook and cranny in Jamaica and all Jamaicans should be concerned.
The surge in violent sex assault on women and young girls lately is alarming, and every effort must be made to stop it. I believe rapists have a special place in hell. I cannot understand how anyone can lack so much self-respect to violate another.
As I struggle to find words, my thoughts are with the victims who, sadly, will have to live with the trauma of what happened. Fortunately, the quick action of one of the attacked women ended up in the accused being disarmed and shot.
I hope he will live to face justice and be shamed.
