Taxi licence fee hike unjustified
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I am amazed that the Transport Authority has the authority to clandestinely increase licensing fees by 40 per cent by just a notice.
Why? To cover rising administrative costs. Yet no one in authority will listen to the cries of the taxi operators for an increase in fares.
This is proof that the Government has no moral authority to bash the banks for their ever-increasing fees. Government has consistently farmed off departments into executive agencies, followed my massive increases in fees.
The Transport Authority has increased the number of parishes where hackney licences will be available. This should bring in additional revenue.
Yet it was in such a dire financial situation that it found it necessary to increase fees at this time. Who really cares about the voiceless, the weak, the people at the bottom of the financial ladder in our society?
As I write this, I am reminded of an article featured in our paper recently, where it is alleged that Government waived a monthly $780,000 in PAYE taxes for officers at the finance ministry. What an equitable society!
