Judges too hostile against Malahoo Forte

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The struggle for fairness runs like a chord throughout this country's history.

I have been reading of the proceedings from the constitutional challenge to the National Identification System now happening in the Supreme Court.

I have been following The Gleaner's coverage, as well as tweets from human-rights activist Susan Goffe and from RJR journalist Dionne Jackson-Miller.

I am very surprised by what may be construed as politically charged comments that Chief Justice Bryan Sykes and David Batts have directed to Marlene Malahoo Forte, the attorney general.

In fact, based on what is being tweeted and reported in social and traditional media, it seems as if those two judges are the ones bringing the constitutional challenge and not the People's National Party (PNP).

When the attorney for the PNP was making his submissions, there was no such hostility towards him - none whatsoever!

But once Mrs Malahoo Forte arose, Sykes went on to parade his power.

How should the public interpret what is transpiring before us? The court seemed to be biased in favour of the PNP.

It is for these and other reasons why the Government needs to implement television coverage in our courts. It won't stop politically charged and biased comments, but it would give citizens an opportunity to properly assess the proceedings.
