It is difficult for the police

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Can you predict the time when a cock is going to crow? Of course not. Can you tell the day, the time, or the hour when there will be a double murder-suicide to prevent it from happening? Of course not. This is just to tell you how hard the work of the police and armed forces is. They don’t know when they will be suddenly attacked by gunmen. Neither can they predict when there is going to be a break-in at a home by thugs to prevent it from taking place.

It’s very sad to see so many of our policemen being killed by presumptuous ‘gun bwoys’, who are all over Jamaica like ‘leggo beasts’. The killing of our cops became a norm long ago, and many cops have lost their lives in the past decades. Who will watch their backs? Many things are easier said than done. The criminals are the ones who should be dying in cold blood instead of the police.

It’s been years now that our country has been overrun, being taken over by murderers and criminals, while our security forces are putting their lives on the line to save and protect us. But the crime problem is like a handful of policemen to one million ‘gun bwoys’, ten times bigger than us.

Despite the fact that the police are facing the fire in their bulletproof vests, the gunshots from powerful rifles or M16 guns are penetrating their armour and causing the loss of their lives or serious injuries. The question is, do our police have the best type of equipment to fight crime? This is something to think about.

Jamaica has strong national security, and our ports, airports, and harbours are being furnished with strong security, too. And guns are not made in Jamaica, so, for the life of me, I can’t understand why this country has been infested with so many illegal guns and gun pests for so many years. Who must get the blame?

We say thanks to Senior Superintendent of Police Stephanie Lindsay and other hard-working members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force for their outstanding service to this nation. Let us give them our full support in our continuous fight against crime.
