Dedicated taxi lanes at toll plazas will cut chaos

Published:Tuesday | November 3, 2020 | 12:06 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I read a letter recently, where the writer made the suggestion to issue tickets to taxi drivers who cut the lines at tollbooths. However, this calls for more thinking on the matter. There needs to be some thought given to proper traffic flow.

What needs to be done at all toll plazas is to have dedicated lanes for taxis, buses, and public-transport vehicles. In some toll plazas, such as Portmore, there should be at least two dedicated lanes so that there is a smooth flow. This would depend on the volume of traffic through the day. For example, when the traffic is high from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. from Portmore to the Kingston side, then the two lanes could be converted to taxi and bus lanes. Similarly, in the evening, from 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., similar arrangements could be put in place from Kingston going to Portmore. This should address the disorder that happens at present where taxis and private cars are jockeying for entrance.

We need to cut the chaos.
