There is no post or role of deputy governor-general

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I write concerning an article published in The Gleaner concerning the governor-general. The reference identified is incorrect and misleading to the public. The first instance is the story published Sunday, October 30, titled ‘Buchanan appointed JP despite concerns about convictions’, where Custos Steadman Fuller is identified as the deputy governor-general.

Kindly be advised that there is no such post or office. Unlike other offices where a member may be named as the deputy prime minister or deputy mayor, and has that title even while the prime minister or mayor is in office, the same does not apply to the Office of the Governor-General.

Custos Fuller, or any other deputy appointed, is only appointed to serve for the period specific to the governor-general’s absence from the office. So soon as the governor-general returns to office, the role is dissolved.
