Many a slip ‘twixt the cup and the lip
THE EDITOR, Madam;
There is a saying in football, ‘the ball is round’, meaning anything can happen in a game.
One needs to look no further than the current World Cup being played in Qatar.
Cup favourites Brazil, with what was being said to be that country’s most balanced team since 1970, was dumped at the quarter-finals by the less fancied Croatia. Poland suffered the same fate from Morocco at the same stage.
Indeed, there has been a plethora of upsets since the start of the competition on November 20.
Here at home, Kingston College entered the 2022 Manning Cup competition as strong favourites.
The team’s performance in the early stages certainly underscored this.
In Dujuan ‘Whisper’ Richards they boasted arguably one of the most gifted and lethal strikers in schoolboy football’s history.
With Richards netting some 30-odd goals and poised to be the season’s top goal scorer, the ‘Purples’ seemed unstoppable.
Yet, they ended the season without a single trophy, while much less vaunted schools have added silverware to their cabinet.
Indeed, there is many a slip ‘twixt the cup and the lip.
