Fundamentalists should stop preaching morality

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The only time we hear of the Love March Movement and Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society is when the word gay or LGBTQ is mentioned in the media. These movements are rooted in fundamentalist religion with extreme beliefs primarily focused on an anti-gay agenda. They do not represent the majority.

It is time we call them out for what they are, fake, immature and archaic. They must realise that religion is a choice, which is why there are so many different religious beliefs. There are many who do not believe in religion and they have rights too. These groups never comment on child abuse, gender violence, crime, corruption and other social ills such as poverty. They only have energy for gays.

These extreme movements come out from under the rock to try to push their anti-gay agenda. Can people be so obsessed with the sexuality of others? These groups have a one-track, warped mind developed from years of indoctrination and lack of intellect. They have no say in the making of laws which affect everyone. It’s almost 2023, and these backward Victorian thoughts have no place in modern-day society. These people should learn to allow consenting adults to live their lives. LGBTQ rights is a human rights issue, not an issue for fundamentalists.

People don’t pick and choose who they are. Sexuality is not a choice. People choose when they become sexually active and who their partners will be, they have the right to be, and to consent. Who they are as a person and their sexuality is embedded in their DNA, regardless of whether or not they are sexually active, married or single. No law in a modern society should attempt to define people’s rights to be who they are in their own space. To these extremists and individuals who think like them, they should mind their own business, stay far away from gays if they must (assuming they can tell who is and who isn’t).

Grow up and find something more constructive to do with your time and religion. Consenting adults have equal rights to be who they are and that will never change, whether they agree or disagree.

We must improve sexual education and concede that sexuality is part of life and reality. It is time to stop the nonsense and immaturity and allow people to live and be who they are in a safe and healthy environment.
