Political silly season

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The heat is on, and I am not referring to the scorching summer temperatures courtesy of climate change, global warming or anything else you wish to add. The political silly season is heating up with political actors, both in and outside of Parliament, vying to see who can do or say the most outrageous things.

One minute dead Comrades are being encouraged to exercise their civic duty to vote, the next constitutional amendments are rammed through Parliament and the DPP is offered advice on matters of a sexual nature. If all this is taking place with a constitutional general election still two years in the future, the prospects for political entertainment appear bright.

There is never a dull moment on the political scene. The Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation should seriously consider promoting sittings of Parliament as a sitcom in partnership with Hollywood. This sitcom, with a certain MP in a starring role, is sure to be a hit, generating hundreds of millions of foreign exchange for the government’s coffers. The MP who alleges the Integrity Commission is out to get him should play a prominent role. An appropriate title for the sitcom could be ‘Jamaica, No, Problem!’

The scorching summer heat can be damaging to humans and we are constantly told to hydrate, avoid exposure to the sun and wear natural fabrics. A heat advisory is now required on how politicians can guard their brains and tongues from the damaging effects of overexposure.

As we continue to choose the path of most resistance, I don’t know whose side Jah is standing by, although the DPP has laid claim to that knowledge, but we have certainly elevated controversy and bickering to an art.

Our leaders are fiddling while Jamaica burns – literally and figuratively.
