Government did the right thing

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The Jamaican Evangelical Alliance commends The Government on its stand against committing a cultural and Christian inconsistency, by refusing to grant diplomatic immunity for the spouse of a gay diplomat to be assigned to the US Embassy in Jamaica.

For The Government to have granted diplomatic status to a homosexual couple, give legitimacy or grant legal status to any individual or institution, would have been a failure to obey the laws of the land.

We believe that Jamaica’s bilateral diplomatic relationship with all sovereign nations should be conducted in a spirit of mutual respect for the laws of our nation. It is, therefore, imperative that all efforts be employed to avoid any impression of exploitation, antagonism, or imperialism as this undermines dialogue and democracy.

As a nation, let us pray for peace in Jamaica and in our partnering countries around the world.

BISHOP ALVIN BAILEY

President
