Longstanding water problem creating hardships

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I write this letter with deep concern and frustration regarding the unreliable tap water service provided by the National Water Commission (NWC) in the community of Crescent District, St Catherine. For an entire year, I have faced continuous hardships because of its inability to ensure a consistent water supply to my household. I am now left with no choice but to resort to purchasing water from trucks, incurring an exorbitant cost of $8,000 every two weeks to fill two water tanks.

This situation is unacceptable, and it has placed an immense financial burden on my family. Despite the substantial bills that we pay, the utility company has failed to deliver a reliable water service, pushing us to rely on costly alternatives.

Adding to this distressing scenario, I was shocked to receive a recent letter from NWC threatening to disconnect its service, even though there is erratic water supply. It seems utterly unjust that they would further penalise me, compounding the already-challenging circumstances I am facing.

I implore the concerned authorities and the community to take immediate action to address this issue. The NWC should be held accountable for its inability to provide an essential commodity like water, and for the excessive financial burden they have placed on customers like me. There must be a transparent investigation into the root cause of these ongoing water disruptions, and appropriate measures must be taken to ensure an uninterrupted water supply to all affected households.

Further, the NWC needs to reconsider its approach to customer communication. Threatening disconnection, even when the service is already unavailable, demonstrates a lack of empathy and understanding for the difficulties we are experiencing.

I urge the community and relevant regulatory bodies to rally together and demand a swift resolution to this issue. Access to clean and reliable tap water is a fundamental human right, and no household should endure such hardships because of the negligence of a utility provider.
