Letter of the Day | MPs must recuse themselves now

THE EDITOR, Madam:
We at the Advocates Network support the call by The Gleaner editorial of August 16 for “members of parliament (MPs), if he or she has been advised of being the subject of an investigation by the Integrity Commission (IC) for illicit enrichment”, to recuse themselves from all assignments they have been given until they satisfy the Integrity Commission and are absolved.
We believe that this will enhance our democracy and send a message that our MPs are listening to the calls for greater transparency and accountability, and improve our standing as a country committed to wiping out corruption and chicanery.
Our standing in terms of eradication of corruption and improving transparency must be viewed by our leaders as paramount, if we are to see more sustainable investment and development of our country and our people.
