THE EDITOR, Madam:

The frequent, obstructive and annoying traffic congestions all over the city of Kingston during the workweek (between Mondays and Fridays) are becoming almost unbearable. On Friday November 24, the traffic lines on major thoroughfares seem to be at an all-time high. This is a situation that needs to be urgently addressed by the Government of Jamaica (GOJ).

The fact of the matter is that motorists on Kingston’s numerous major roads are spending too much time getting from point A to point B. This is time that people could, and should, spend far more wisely and productively. I am sure this is negatively impacting many critical areas.

Towards this end, I propose that the GOJ should immediately establish a team of experts to come up with solutions to solve this mounting problem. This team should be comprised of logistics experts, civil engineers, road contractors, and other professionals who can provide workable solutions.

In my opinion, two persons, both of whom have exceptional track records and should be in this team are Parris Lyew-Ayee Jr, head of Mona GeoInformatics Institute and conceptualiser and developer of the Caribbean’s first GPS navigation system; and Kingsley Thomas, who developed and administered the successful implementation of Highway 2000.

We need to find solutions to this mounting problem, and fast!
