Letter of the Day | Deathtrap on St Thomas highway
THE EDITOR, Madam:
On an under-construction section of the St Thomas highway on the unfinished dual carriageway between Harbour View and Albion, there are at least two crossover points which, due to an absence of warning signs, poses extreme threats to the safety of unsuspecting motorists, especially during the night.
Currently, not all sections of this dual carriageway can be used simultaneously as the work has not been completed on either sides. The motorists have to either crossover from the northern side to the southern side, or vice versa. To help prevent very serious accidents happening (which almost happened to me one night recently) at one of these points, I would like to recommend the following to be put in place at the earliest:
1. At the approach of each crossover point (COP) from both directions, two signs should be placed. Two signs should be placed about 200 metres from each COP. The sign further from the COP should read: ‘DETOUR 400m AHEAD - REDUCE SPEED TO 20km/h’. The sign closer to the COP should read: ‘DETOUR 200m AHEAD’.
2. At each entrance of the COP, place a large sign reading ‘DETOUR’, and should include proper arrows straddling each branch of the carriageway.
3. Tangerine-coloured cones be placed, maybe three metres apart, and 50 metres from each COP in the middle of each branch of the carriageway, through the crossover point as a guide to motorists.
If these corrective measures are not taken immediately, it can lead to a major accident taking place in that section of the highway. The contractors and those responsible for the construction of the highway should take action.
CONCERNED MOTORIST
