Negril badly needs care and attention

Published:Wednesday | December 20, 2023 | 12:09 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I continue to be amazed by the poor treatment, almost disregard, for Negril by the Government.

I note with keen interest that $40 million has just been allocated for improvements in Montego Bay. Yet Negril, which is a major contributor to the tourism revenues in the island, is suffering from very poor roads, disgraceful garbage collection, and rising crime. And this is not only where locals are concerned.

When you consider the volume of tourists who visit Negril, what gives?

Are the powers that be blind? Can they not see that this resort community, so valuable to the tourism sector and indeed the economy of Jamaica, is woefully in need of some care and attention?

We must look beyond the highways and see that somewhere out west, there is a gem that continues to suffer from lack of attention.

Mr MP Wilson, Minister Bartlett, Mr Prime Minister, please open your eyes and step up to the plate.

The people of Negril, the merchants, and the hoteliers are not asking for a favour; we are asking you to protect and maintain this asset that is so valuable to us all, and, indeed, the viability of Jamaica.

We can’t wait any longer…The time is now!
