Letter of the Day | Jamaica must raise a voice against genocide

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing with reference to the article by Anika Kiddoe, ‘Wars all around us: Our role in preserving humanity’. This is a brilliantly written article that must cut every true-blooded Jamaican to the core. She has laid bare that genocide is genocide. It is more than the fact that the perpetrator is a member of the United Nations. It is also because the United Nations created the situation by placing a people on the lands of another people, declaring the newcomer an independent nation, and promising the settled that it would become a nation “someday, a day that has stubbornly refused to come. Three score and ten years plus and still no sign of that day coming.

Job would have been frustrated. Whatever the sentiments might have been in the immediate aftermath of October 7, two months of open season on a defenceless people, penned in on a narrow strip without food, water, medicines, or shelter must be considered an excessive price.

I commend the courage of Kiddoe for placing it on our collective conscience. I join her in calling on those who represent and act on behalf of this nation to act now. It is already much too late.
