GoodHeart | Supreme Hero using driving school to steer youths towards success
Nicholas McKenzie, founder of Kritical Defensive Driving School in Kingston, has been named one of Supreme Ventures Foundation’s 2024 Supreme Heroes for his outstanding efforts in promoting road safety, responsible driving, and youth empowerment through skills training.
McKenzie’s impact extends far beyond teaching individuals how to operate a vehicle. Since opening the doors to Kritical Defensive Driving School, he has used his platform to instil life-changing values in young Jamaicans, such as discipline, responsibility, confidence, and respect for the road. For many of his students, especially those from underserved backgrounds, Kritical is more than a school, it’s a stepping stone to independence and a career pathway in transportation.
“I’ve always believed that driving is a life skill that opens doors, but it must come with discipline,” said McKenzie. “It’s not just about passing a test, it’s about understanding responsibility, respecting others, and being equipped to make smart decisions under pressure.”
McKenzie’s passion for road safety and youth empowerment comes from lived experience. Growing up in Kingston, he witnessed firsthand how poor road habits and lack of opportunities could derail young lives. Determined to be part of the solution, he created a safe and encouraging space where learning to drive becomes a vehicle for transformation.
His programmes emphasise more than just the technical aspects of driving. Students at Kritical Defensive Driving School learn defensive driving techniques, risk awareness, and the legal and ethical responsibilities that come with being behind the wheel. In so doing, McKenzie has not only helped to reduce the rate of traffic violations and accidents in his community, but he has also restored hope in young people looking for a second chance.
PROUD MOMENT
“Being named a Supreme Hero means someone sees that what we’re doing is making a difference,” said McKenzie. “I’m proud to stand with other changemakers across Jamaica who are working to uplift their communities. With this platform, I hope to continue empowering our youth and building a culture of safety and self-belief.”
McKenzie also partners with local stakeholders to promote safe driving beyond the classroom. He has conducted community outreach programmes in schools and has worked with organisations such as the Road Safety Unit and HEART/NSTA Trust to offer certified training and raise awareness about road safety across Jamaica.
His work is especially timely. As Jamaica continues to grapple with rising road accidents and traffic-related fatalities, grassroots initiatives like Kritical Defensive Driving School are crucial to national progress. By targeting young drivers and embedding core values early on, McKenzie is helping to lay the foundation for a safer, more responsible generation of motorists.
Now recognised nationally as a Supreme Hero, McKenzie is even more motivated to expand his mission. He envisions opening more branches of Kritical Defensive Driving School in rural and inner-city areas, offering scholarships for low-income students, and developing programmes that combine driving with leadership and personal development.
In every lesson, McKenzie reminds his students that driving isn’t just a destination – it’s a journey of discipline, confidence, and self-worth. Through Kritical, he continues to steer lives in the right direction, one student, one gear shift, and one success story at a time.
