As life unfolds in unexpected ways, it’s a rare gift to find someone who stands beside you through every twist and turn. For Dee-Andre Gooden, a high school educator, and Jameika McKenzie, a business development clerk, love wasn’t just about grand gestures – it was built in the quiet strength of showing up for each other through both laughter and grief. From their first message to the day they said “I do”, their journey has been filled with sweet surprises, steady faith, and a deepening bond that carried them through moments both light and challenging.

Dee-Andre slid into Jameika’s DMs on her birthday. The two stayed in contact for a few weeks before meeting, in person, at a concert they both originally didn’t plan on attending. “My first impression of Jameika was that she was very stunning. She had an alluring smile. After getting to know her more, her true beauty was what she had on the inside. Such a sweet, genuine soul,” Dee-Andre shared.

For their first date, Jameika and Dee-Andre went to Ocean’s 11 Restaurant in Ocho Rios on New Year’s Eve in 2020. After enjoying each other’s company and dinner, the couple savoured some ice cream for dessert.

Dee-Andre clearly made a lasting impression – his presence and conversation held Jameika’s attention so completely that as time slipped by and more dates followed, she found herself falling in love. “I realised I was in love with him when we would spend the entire day together on dates, and it felt like I saw him for just 15 seconds. It wasn’t the feeling of attachment but the feeling of someone filling an empty part of you that you didn’t even know existed,” Jameika told Island Wedding.

Equally smitten, Dee-Andre shared that, “If there was ever a thought in terms of differences, it would only involve her surpassing my expectations. The feeling through conversing in itself, created room [for me] to believe that what we have could be something special.”

As they got to know each other more, even their faith helped to strengthen their relationship. “We are a Christian couple that ensures that God is at the forefront of our relationship. This meant praying together every single night that we could, even if we were upset with each other,” Jameika stated.

Four years of courting later, Dee-Andre decided in 2024 that he was ready to ask Jameika to be his wife. But as he began planning the proposal, he was met with the unexpected loss of his father, Junior Gooden. “I went through a difficult period, and I suddenly realised how short life was. I didn’t want to go any longer without calling Jameika my wife,” Dee-Andre shared.

Before his passing, Dee-Andre’s father had helped him choose the perfect engagement ring – a memory that made the next steps even more meaningful. Now, it was time to plan the proposal, and Dee-Andre was determined to make sure every detail reflected Jameika’s style and preferences. “When the ring was bought, Jameika was overseas, but I already had the conversation with her parents and asked them for their blessing to marry their daughter. After getting their blessing, I reached out to several venues trying to find the perfect place,” Dee-Andre explained.

A week following his dad’s passing, Dee-Andre planned to propose at Jameika’s University of Technology, Jamaica graduation on November 16, 2024. “Despite being broken, I knew my father would have wanted me to push through. Wanting to surprise her now became difficult. Because in a time of grief, she would have known I wouldn’t be interested in going to a picnic. Her graduation day was fast approaching, and I thought to myself, why not propose at her graduation? That way, she would have all her friends and family members present,” Dee-Andre shared.

Confident that she would take his hand in marriage, Dee-Andre’s plan to propose was set in motion. “We took some normal shots at first, then the photographer instructed her to stand in front of me and take two steps forward. He captured that shot and then told her to turn around and look at me. As she turned, I would have been down on one knee, waiting to ask her to be my wife, to which she said yes,” he detailed.

Jameika told Island Wedding that she had an inkling Dee-Andre was going to pop the question. “I know Dee-Andre like the palm [of my hand], and had a little hint of the proposal plans. I doubted my gut feelings a bit since I knew he was still grieving the passing of his dad,” Jameika shared when talking about the proposal.

Immediately after the proposal, the newly engaged couple attended Dee-Andre’s father’s candlelight ceremony, and Jameika got to see even more of her fiancé’s strength on display. “I admire his ability to bounce back from anything life throws at him and still show the love and care for the ones that he holds dear to his heart,” Jameika said.

Five months later, the couple tied the knot on Saturday, April 12, at Holiday Haven Resorts in Runaway Bay, St Ann. Jameika, the blushing bride, walked down the aisle to Calum Scott’s Biblical, wearing an a-line ivory dress.

Thinking about how she felt on her big day, Jameika recalled, “[When] the time had come to walk down the aisle, my mom comforted me and then proceeded to walk me to where my dad was, [and] she handed me over to him. As he walked me down the aisle, the entire experience felt surreal. What we waited for had come to pass after four years.”

The newlyweds are planning on going on their honeymoon soon.
