ISLAND WEDDING | A love 16 years in the making for Darien and Kady-Ann

Kady-Ann Smith and Darien Thomas met 16 years ago at the University of Technology, Jamaica, when a simple group project brought them together. From classmates to friends — and now husband and wife — their journey proves that true love is worth the wait.
“I remember thinking she was very pretty and that she reminded me of someone familiar. Although we remained classmates for four years, we were mostly strangers during that time,” Darien shared with Island Wedding.
For Kady-Ann, things were a bit different at the start, as Darien was just another friend. It wasn’t until 2015, five years later, that their friendship truly deepened.
While interning at the Kingston and St Andrew Health Department, the two were assigned to collect house-to-house data. One moment in particular stayed with Darien, as what Kady-Ann saw as simply being a team player meant a lot to him.
“Kady-Ann took the time to walk through my community with me to help gather the data. That simple act meant a lot to me. From that moment, I realised she was genuine,” he recalled, adding, “She brought out the best in people and always wanted the best for everyone around her,” Darien recalled.
The two stayed in touch, attending parties, beach trips, game nights, and weekend outings with other friends. Darien admitted that it was Kady-Ann who convinced him to join those group events.
“She was always the one planning gatherings and bringing everyone together. Even when sleep a kill me after a night shift, if she called, I would go. She made my twenties unforgettable,” he stated.
Remembering those days, Kady-Ann said, “He was genuinely a good person, innocent at heart, giving everyone the benefit of the doubt and always ready to help anyone in need. If I ever needed help with something, I knew he would always be there.”
They also bonded over shared interests like music and Real Madrid, as well as spirituality, including beliefs in universal alignment, karma, and Rastafari.
As their friendship grew closer, Kady-Ann made a romantic move on Darien in 2018: “We were hanging out with our friend group and we were alone and I kissed him.”
But, their friendship stayed the same for a while, until the two later agreed to take things further. Kady-Ann continued, “...we were friends one day, then we started hanging out alone and then we decided we were gonna give the relationship thing a shot.”
Sharing what he admires most about his bride, Darien says it’s her “honesty and sincerity”. Complimenting his wife, he adds, “She has an enormous heart and helps people simply because she believes love makes the world better.”
They’ve been through life’s ups and downs, always showing up for each other. One such moment came in 2018 during a visit to Darien’s grandmother, who was suffering from dementia. It was then that Darien revealed a side of himself to Kady-Ann she had never seen before.
“Darien cared for her with patience and love, treating her like the same grandmother he had known since childhood. She couldn’t speak at the time, but one moment stayed with me forever. I made a joke, and his grandmother smiled gently and used her hand to gently rub my hand, as if she was giving me a quiet approval,” Kady-Ann said.
Another challenging moment came shortly after Darien bought his first car, when he was involved in an accident. It was Kady-Ann’s care and support during those difficult days that deepened his love and connection to her even more.
“It was a stressful time, but Kady-Ann took me to Portland to stay with her family. There, surrounded by rivers, good food, and the warmth of her mother, I felt cared for in a way that stayed with me,” Darien explained.
After everything they had been through, and truly appreciating her care, patience, and devotion, Darien knew in July 2023 that he wanted to marry Kady-Ann. Having created a vision board and accomplished most of their goals, they decided they didn’t want to wait another year to be married. Darien acted on his love and proposed to Kady-Ann on November 18 of the same year.
The couple tied the knot on February 6 at the Registrar General’s Department, incorporating their shared love of music with To Build a Home by The Cinematic Orchestra during their vows.
Their celebration continued at Boone Hall Oasis in Stony Hill, where they shared their first dance to James Arthur’s Certain Things. Though Darien’s mother couldn’t be there in person, she found a special way to show her love and support from afar.
“[We were] surprised during the toasts with a special video message from her, blessing the marriage,” he said. “It was emotional and unforgettable.”
