Culture Minister, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, has announced the appointment of Vishu Tolan as a commissioner of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC).

Tolan is the chairman of the National Council for Indian Culture in Jamaica.

According to Grange, the appointment is part of the Government’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting the traditions of indigenous groups in Jamaica.

"When we celebrate Independence, when we celebrate what is so beautiful about Jamaica, the Indian culture will be a part of those wonderful experiences,” she said.

Grange was speaking in Chedwin Park on Sunday at the annual Indian Family Fun Day put on by the National Council for Indian Culture in Jamaica.

Citing the significance of the contribution of the Indian population to the Jamaican culture, the minister also announced that, the Government will be issuing a grant towards the staging of the annual Indian fun day to ensure the preservation and continuation of their culture here.
