Life sentence for man who pleaded guilty to killing young partner's disapproving mother
A 22-year-old man who admitted to chopping a St Mary woman to death because she did not approve of his relationship with her teenage daughter has been sentenced to life in prison at hard labour.
In handing down the sentence in the Home Circuit Court yesterday, High Court judge, Justice Courtney Daye ordered that the convicted killer, Kenroy Hayles must serve 22 years behind bars before he is eligible for parole.
Hayles pleaded guilty last December to killing 34-year-old Olivene Erica Brown in Fontabelle district, St Mary in July 2016.
His guilty plea came during sentence reduction day on December 20 last year, which would make him eligible for a discounted sentence.
According to prosecutors, Hayles was involved in an intimate relationship with Brown’s 14-year-old daughter and she openly expressed her disapproval.
In a written confession to police investigators, Hayles detailed how he hid in Brown’s home then attacked and chopped her several times with a machete after she had retired to bed.
