Kingston mayor hoping for deepened relationship from inaugural mayor conference
A decision as to whether or not the inaugural Conference of the Mayors should be expanded to include non-English speaking countries, in addition to finding ways of deepening relationships in the region, are issues Delroy Williams, Kingston’s mayor, expects to be resolved at the three-day meeting, currently underway at the University of the West Indies Regional Headquarters in St Andrew.
The conference is being held under the theme, “Caribbean Cities: Honouring the Past, Embracing a Smart Future”.
Williams, in addressing this morning's monthly meeting of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation, indicated that the conference, which started on Monday, is expected to yield sustainable partnerships and fruitful discussions.
“We want a far greater role in Latin America as a city,” he said.
“We in the Caribbean we have a common background, history and culture. We also have similar issues in terms of the experiences we face and problems we encounter. However there are different approaches that are used and some have yielded results and we intend to learn some of those approaches. They too can learn from us,” he continued.
Among those attending the conference are Wayne Messam, Mayor of the City of Miramar, Florida, Peterson Francis, Mayor of Castries, St Lucia and Mayor of Georgetown, Guyana, Patricia Chase Green.
