McKenzie plans to meet with PNP councillors in St Thomas

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie says he plans to meet with People's National Party (PNP) councillors at the St Thomas Municipal Corporation to discuss their concerns about the operation of the local authority.

McKenzie did not give a timetable for the meeting, but said it would be convened "as soon as possible."

Earlier this year, PNP councillors raised a number of concerns about the operation of the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation and announced plans to move a motion of no-confidence against then Mayor of Morant Bay, Lenworth Rawle and Michael Hue, who served as his deputy at the time.

However, the motion was declared null and void after Rawle tendered his resignation and Hue was appointed Mayor.

Following yesterday's by-election, won by the JLP's John Lee, McKenzie said one of the first things he intend to do is convene a meeting with all PNP councillors in St Thomas to work out their differences in the interest of the people of the parish.

"I am charging the PNP councillors to return to serve out the time they have left at the corporation. They need to go back to the work of the people," McKenzie said.

PNP councillors have already announced that they intend to move another no-confidence motion against Mayor Hue.

That motion is scheduled to be debated on June 12 when Lee will also be sworn in as Councillor for the Yallahs Division.
