41 people killed in motor vehicle crashes last month

Forty-one persons were killed on the nation’s roadways last month.

This is the highest number of road deaths in a single month over the last five years, according to figures compiled by the Road Safety Unit in the Ministry of Transport.

Since the start of the year 155 persons have died in 131 fatal crashes, according to the latest figures released by the Road Safety Unit.

There were 32 road deaths in January; 22 in February; 25 in March; 27 in April and eight since the start of this month.

The Road Safety Unit says fatal crashes have decreased by nine per cent when compared with the corresponding period last year while the number of fatalities remains the same.

A breakdown of the statistics shows that 22 elderly persons have died in motor vehicle crashes since January 1, a ten per cent increase when compared to the similar period last year.

Seven children have died in motor vehicle crashes this year, a 22 per cent decrease from the corresponding period last year.
