Reid defends PEP mock exam results
Education Minister Ruel Reid is defending data from the results of the Primary Exit Profile mock examinations that he released to the public last month.
Reid told a media briefing in October that 83 per cent of students scored satisfactorily on the performance task assessment.
At that time, he also disclosed that 22 per cent of the students who sat the science exam achieved satisfactory results.
However, it has since emerged that the performances were worse.
On Tuesday, Parliament heard that in science, 585 students met the standard, while 14,126 nearly met the standard.
In language arts, 12,003 students achieved mastery and 22,759 nearly met the standard.
Poor performances were also recorded in social studies and mathematics.
Reid has pushed back at critics saying, “I have a duty to ensure fairness, accuracy, and transparency. I stand by the scores and interpretation at the press conference.”
“Met standard and nearly met standard have always been used by the MOE (Ministry of Education) to report on satisfactory scores or as passing grades,” he declared.
