After doing one job interview after another, from Mandeville to Old Harbour and within his own parish of Clarendon, Eric Junior Murray is now pushing to establish his own catering business.

Hailing from the troubled community of Effortville in Clarendon, Murray’s ambition is to be his own boss and even opening the doors for others to be employed.

“I have a very strong passion when it comes to food. I started a catering business because there is potential in it. I can cater for weddings, parties ... you name it,” he said, pointing out that he did not go the route of operating a cookshop because it would not allow for versatility, and he would be just another vendor in the area doing the same thing.

FINANCIAL ROADBLOCK

Even as Murray sets his sights on ‘breaking out’, the roadblock to achieving his goal is challenging, and it is for that reason he is hoping someone will buy into his vision and help him to open the door to take his fledgling business to the next level.

“Right now I’m in need of an industrial stove, rice cookers, igloos, big and small pots and warmers to keep my business afloat,” he told The Gleaner.

Murray, who does catering on a small scale, can see no growth, but his reality is that without the proper equipment, he cannot pursue the big gigs.

“If I receive the help, it will make my work more manageable because I would have the equipment to carry out the work more efficiently,” he said.

Murray, who describes himself as a people person with a passion for cooking, said he enjoys going to church. A past student of Kemps Hill High, he also did a course in Commercial Chef Level 1 at Four Paths Training Centre.

He was an employed at Effortville Basic School where he was the chef for five years. Murray’s culinary skills also saw him working for a while at an establishment in Old Harbour, St Catherine.

While he awaits his big break, Murray said he is available to service small catering orders, but his prayer continues to be some organisation, some Good Samaritan seeing the potential and giving him the kick-start he so earnestly craves.
