The Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA) is advising that it is illegal for licensed firearm holders to participate in any gun salutes this festive season.

Licensed firearm holders are being reminded that under the Firearm (Prohibition, Restriction and Regulation) Act 2022, persons should not discharge their firearm in any place except in the lawful protection of themselves, their property, another person, or as otherwise permitted by law.

Any licensed firearm holder who participates in gun salutes commits an offence and is liable upon conviction to a term of imprisonment not exceeding three years or a fine of up to $3 million.

In addition, the firearm licence may be revoked.

The FLA says it stands resolute in upholding the law and as such implores licensed firearm holders to be responsible in the use of their firearms, especially during this season.

Members of the public are being encouraged to provide the FLA with any information regarding concerns or breaches observed in relation to licensed firearm holders and report any breach of the law to the nearest police station.
