St Catherine councillors press for police protection
There is a call in the St Catherine Municipal Corporation for its elected representatives to be provided with security as they carry out their work.
Councillor for the Treadways division, Sydney Rose, led the call during Thursday's sitting of the Corporation.
"In light of recent incidents, we need security protection at our meetings, plus there's a need for members to be protected on the streets," Rose said.
"We have seen where Councillor Ainsley Parkins was shot and killed in his division, while he carried out the work that he is sworn to," Rose stated, adding that "the councillors are going into several volatile areas and need to be protected."
He asked Chairman of the Corporation, Norman Scott, to write to the commissioner of police to make the request.
In supporting the call, Councillor Peter Abrahams, of the Bog Walk division, said he was recently attacked and assaulted by a man in his division.
"Your worship we need to be protected. I was attacked by a man at a church where I went to work," Abrahams said.
The councillors also noted that with impending local government elections there is a pressing need for protection.
"Many may think that they don't need it, but I have been trying for years and will be asking the secretary to write a letter to the commissioner of police again," Scott said.
