Cop's gun recovered, mentally-ill man in custody

The firearm stolen from a policeman last week Tuesday and used to shoot his colleague along Maxfield Avenue in St Andrew has been recovered.

The police said the gun was retrieved from a man believed to be of unsound mind in the Richmond Park community on Tuesday.

Our news team understands that some time after 6 p.m., the man was reportedly seen at a property on Kings Avenue with the firearm and the police were summoned.

A police team went to the area and The Gleaner was told that during a reported struggle with several officers the firearm fell from the man's waistband. 

The government issued Glock pistol contained nine live rounds.

During further checks, the police searched the man and found a mental outpatient card with a Waltham Park Road, Kingston 13 address.

He was subsequently taken into custody.

On January 9, there was major traffic congestion in the Corporate Area as investigators cordoned the crime scene and conducted a manhunt for the shooter.

Reports suggest that during a traffic stop, a constable was shot multiple times after a man disarmed his colleague.

The man escaped.

The injured cop was rushed to hospital by the motorist he had sought to prosecute.
