19 murders recorded in Jamaica last week

There were 19 reported murders in Jamaica over the seven-day period of March 2-9, according to the latest serious crime statistics published by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) today.

As at March 9, the country recorded 192 murders, up from 173 a week prior.

This represents a 17 per cent decline or 39 fewer murders year on year.

At that point in 2023, the JCF reported 231 murders.

St James is still the most murderous police division of all 19 divisions, with 28 homicides, though this represents a 15 per cent decline when compared to the corresponding period last year.

St Andrew South 19, St Catherine South 15, Westmoreland 14, Kingston Eastern 14, and St Andrew Central 14 round out the top six divisions with the most homicides.

Portland has the least with one murder recorded since the start of the year.

Shootings overall declined two per cent while the number of injured persons have increased by 13 reports year on year. 

Rape is down 41 per cent, robbery down two per cent, and break-ins down 19 per cent.
