Policeman freed of corruption charges after witnesses fail to show up for court

A former policeman was freed of corruption charges in the St Catherine Parish Court on Friday after the prosecution failed to ensure the attendance of witnesses at court.

Marlon Campbell, formerly of the Central Village Police Station, was charged with perverting the course of justice and two counts of solicitation.

Attorney-at-law Ayisha Robb-Cunningham made an application for the case to be dismissed, telling the court that Campbell was being held despite the constant absence of witnesses who have shown no interest in the case.

"He has lost millions of dollars and after four years with numerous trial dates. In the interest of justice I do submit that this matter should end today," Robb said.

Senior Parish Court Judge Desiree Alleyne consulted with the clerk of court then dismissed the matter.

It was alleged that in September 2018, the policeman received reports of a case of assault and coerced the complainant to drop the charges instead of pursuing the matter.

He was accused of collecting $30,000 to have the matter dropped.

The matter was reported and an investigation was launched, after which he was arrested and charged.

He made numerous court appearances and maintained his innocence throughout.
