Trelawny garbage transfer station on hold – NSWMA head
Construction of a transfer station to better manage garbage collection in Trelawny has been put on hold pending a report from an enterprise team headed by Lyttleton Shirley.
Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, Audley Gordon, gave the update to The Gleaner during an interview.
"They are charged with crafting out a new infrastructure for garbage collection and waste management in Jamaica. We have things which we continue to do, which is the regular collection of garbage," said Gordon.
"We should allow the consultants to finish their work and submit a report before spending millions of taxpayers' money to build something which, when the dust settles, might not be consistent with what is required," he continued.
The transfer station was meant to provide a holding area for solid waste and was expected to significantly reduce the amount of time that trucks travel back and forth.
In the meantime, Gordon announced that 52 new trucks are coming.
"All parishes will be receiving an allotment. Kingston is not Jamaica. All the parishes pay property tax to have their garbage collected," he said.
