Over 200 vehicles seized, 1,500 prosecuted under crackdown on illegal PPV operators
The Transport Authority is reporting that it seized 269 vehicles and that 1,577 prosecutions were undertaken for various offences as part of a crackdown on illegal public passenger vehicle (PPV) operators over the past four weeks.
The regulator says the clampdown is under a special initiative called “Operation Streamline”, which gives attention to, among other things, operators who have failed to renew their road licences, which expired on March 31.
It says the vehicles that were seized were cited for no road licences and operating contrary to the terms and conditions of the road licences.
The authority noted that during operations on Monday 914 vehicles were checked which saw 355 summonses being served and 243 tints and 45 graphics being removed from vehicles.
In addition, 12 vehicles were seized for various offences, ranging from heavy tints, none wearing of uniforms, and operating without a Transport Authority badge.
The agency's Managing Director, Ralston Smith, says the authority has adopted a zero-tolerance approach in its road operations as it seeks to implement standards for the operations of public transportation services in order to enhance the safety and security of the commuting public and all road users as well as the reliability and efficiency of public transportation services.
The authority is therefore reminding all public passenger vehicle operators to abide by the relevant regulations, as those found in breach will be prosecuted.
Operators found without the requisite licence may also face seizure of their vehicles.
The Transport Authority is urging operators to renew their road licences.
