Work begins to replace Christmas River Bridge in Portland
The National Works Agency (NWA) says work is now under way to replace the Christmas River Bridge in Portland.
The bridge, which is located along the Long Road to Manchioneal corridor, is being replaced as part of works valued at over $681 million.
Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says the Christmas River Bridge, which is now a single lane structure, will be demolished and a two-lane bridge along with sidewalks constructed along the same alignment.
Current activities include the construction of a detour road adjacent to the old structure. The embankment of the roadway is also being excavated to facilitate the widening of the bridge.
Shaw says the river channel will be cleaned to increase the storm water capacity. The approach roads will be reinstated and paved with asphaltic concrete.
The bridge work is expected to be completed by October.
During the period of works, persons who use the roadway are being asked to exercise caution and to obey the instructions on posted signs.
