Member of Parliament for St Thomas Eastern Dr Michelle Charles is demanding a public apology from People's National Party (PNP) general secretary, Dr Dayton Campbell, for alleged defamatory statements questioning the legitimacy of her election to the House of Representatives.

The demand was made in a letter by her attorney, Abe Dabdoub, dated June 24, which was also released to the media.

The PNP recently called for Charles to provide proof of her renunciation of US citizenship or face a potential legal challenge.

However, Dabdoub said in his letter that contrary to allegations and innuendos, Charles was duly and validly elected.

"She is and was at the time of her nomination a citizen of Jamaica residing in Jamaica for more than 12 months prior to her nomination and she was not a citizen or under any form of allegiance whatsoever to a foreign power or state including a commonwealth foreign power or state. Her allegiance is and was to Jamaica only and in keeping with the oath taken at the time of her swearing in as a member of Parliament," Dabdoub stated.

He demanded that Campbell publicly apologise for the alleged defamatory statements made by members of the People's National Part and it's youth arm, the PNP Youth Organisation.
