New Fortress Energy Foundation awards 60 top-performing PEP students
New Fortress Energy, through its foundation has announced that 60 students who performed exceptionally well in the recent Primary Exit Profile (PEP) examinations will be awarded bursaries and school supplies for their hard work for the upcoming academic school year.
In selecting the students, New Fortress Energy collaborated with school principals, guidance counsellors and community leaders in the respective communities where it has its LNG operations, to identify top performing students who are from underserved communities and vulnerable backgrounds with very limited financial resources.
The communities include Port and Refinery Council communities in Hayes (Clarendon), Old Harbour Bay and communities across St James. Each student will receive a $35,000 bursary paid directly to their schools to cover tuition/auxiliary fees plus a book a grant valued at $10,000 each, backpacks, notebooks and other stationery school supplies.
The awards will be presented during NFE Foundation’s annual back-to-school fairs in Clarendon, St Catherine and St James over the coming weeks, when over 2,000 students will benefit from much-needed support in preparation for the upcoming academic year. This means that, in addition to awarding top PEP performers, 1,200 primary and high school students will receive financial aid vouchers valued at $10,000, over 70 high school students will receive community bursaries of $50,000 each for tuition and external examinations while 500 students will benefit from free medical and dental checks.
In addition, all students will receive backpacks, notebooks and other school supplies.
“These amazing, hardworking students deserve to be rewarded for their resilience and dedication to succeed. It must be very challenging going to school without having the required resources such as textbooks or lunch. Yet they are able to look beyond their financial challenges, stay focused and to achieve excellent grades,” said Verona Carter, vice president, New Fortress Energy.
“At New Fortress Energy, we believe that every child should have access to a good education, and so we are delighted to be investing in these students who are our next generation of leaders, innovators and influencers. We encourage them to continue to stay focused, work hard and their future will be very bright.”
