Main suspect in Cherry Tree Lane massacre killed by police
The Jamaica Constabulary Force says a man who was fatally shot during a confrontation with the police on Thursday in the Villa Palm community of St Catherine was the main suspect in the Cherry Tree Lane shooting in Clarendon in which eight people were killed in August.
He has been identified as 32-year-old Kendrick Campbell, otherwise called 'Wormy' of Villa Palm.
Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Area Five, Christopher Phillips, says the development is a "significant breakthrough" in efforts to dismantle organised crime.
About 11:20 a.m., a police team reportedly was on an operation in Villa Palm, when members were allegedly fired upon by Campbell and the fire was returned
Campbell was reportedly shot and injured during the exchange.
He was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The police say they seized one nine millimetre pistol affixed with a magazine containing five cartridges from the scene.
"We are aware that Campbell was not working alone and we are actively pursuing his accomplices," Phillips says.
