Ex-soldier charged over alleged involvement in gang activities
An ex-soldier suspected of being involved in several crimes linked to an inter-gang conflict in the community of Waterhouse in St Andrew has been arrested and charged by the police, the army has confirmed.
His name and the charges have not been disclosed.
The ex-army private was detained at Up Park Camp, the headquarters of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), and formally discharged from the military before he was handed over to the police, the JDF confirmed in a statement today.
“He has been formally charged,” said the statement from the JDF Civil-Military Cooperation and Media Affairs Unit.
The JDF said “specific details” cannot be provided at this time, citing the ongoing police investigation, but said it is cooperating with the police.
“We want to assure the public that we are committed to transparency, accountability, the rule of law and due process,” the army said.
“We will continue to work closely with the Jamaica Constabulary Force on this sensitive matter in order to ensure that justice is served and the integrity of the organisation is upheld.”
