St Ann welcomes Garvey pardon
The St Ann Homecoming and Heritage Foundation has welcomed the presidential pardon granted to the Rt Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
The foundation’s Chairman Lance Neita has said that the foundation has long advocated for the pardon and now looks forward to a complete exoneration from his conviction in the United States.
The chairman said that the foundation will also be renewing its proposals made in 2014 to the universities in Jamaica for the conferral of an Honorary Doctorate of Letters on Jamaica’s first national hero.
The foundation has also made a proposal to the St Ann Municipal Corporation for a designated space in St Ann’s Bay to be named the Marcus Garvey Square.
Launched in 2009, the foundation is a non-profit organisation of civic-minded citizens dedicated to fostering pride in the heritage, achievements and attractions of St Ann.
It reserves a place of honour for Garvey as its most outstanding parishioner and has opened a Garvey Centre at the parish library that serves to educate and inform Jamaicans about the history, philosophy and contribution of Garvey to the upliftment of coloured people across the world.
It also hosts an annual Garvey Lecture at the library co-sponsored by Discovery Bauxite. The 14th lecture will take place on June 6.
